Neal wins to retake lead
6 June 2010
Matt Neal was able to reclaim the points lead in the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship with victory in the final race of the weekend at Oulton Park.
Neal started the final race of the day from eighth on the grid at the wheel of his Honda Civic but moved up to fifth by the end of the opening lap and then made up a further position when race leader Alex MacDowall pulled off with a mechanical issue on lap four.
The double champion was handed third when Tom Chilton got out of shape at Cascades and having taken second from James Nash, was able to secure the lead when he went down the inside of Tom Boardman at Lodge on lap 14. Slight contact as Boardman attempted to turn in saw the SEAT driver retire having enjoyed a fine run up to that point.
Behind Neal, Steven Kane took second place at the wheel of his Airwaves BMW with Nash able to secure his first podium of the season for Triple Eight in third.
Team Aon pairing Chilton and Tom Onslow-Cole took fourth and fifth ahead of Jason Plato, who has now slipped eight points behind Neal in the standings.
Mat Jackson, Rob Collard, Andy Neate and Paul O'Neill rounded out the scorers - the latter finally getting the chance to race after gearbox woes had ruled him out of the first two races.
Gordon Shedden could only manage eleventh ahead of David Pinkney, who was one of two drivers to lose out due to contact from Neate's BMW. The other, fellow Vauxhall driver Andrew Jordan, saw his race end with his car on top of the barriers exiting the Island Hairpin.
