Plato wins to extend lead
5 September 2010
Jason Plato has extended his lead in the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship with victory in the final race of the weekend at Knockhill.
Plato jumped up to second place on the opening lap behind the Ford of Tom Onslow-Cole and then pressurised the Team Aon driver before persistence finally paid off at the hairpin on lap 23.
Having tried on numerous occasions to find a way ahead of the Ford at the hairpin, Plato was finally able to tuck back inside and get a run on Onslow-Cole down the start/finish straight before sliding into the lead at SEAT Curve – pulling away to take victory.
Onslow-Cole settled for second place while behind, Matt Neal took the final podium place in third having benefitted from team-mate Gordon Shedden, James Nash and Andrew Jordan all making mistakes at some point during the race to lose position to the Honda driver.
Paul O'Neill produced a fine drive through to fourth from tenth on the grid ahead of Mat Jackson and Rob Collard – who came from the back of the grid following his accident in race two.
Alex MacDowall, Jordan, Shedden and Tom Chilton took the final points scoring positions, with Chilton battling back from an incident on the opening lap which saw spin off after contact from Neal's Honda as the field turned through Butchers.
Steven Kane failed to start the race after a mechanical issue on his car on the green flag lap while engine issues put Tom Boardman out of the race. Dave Pinkney meanwhile was put into retirement by debutant Jeff Smith who hit his fellow Vauxhall driver at Scotsman and put him into the gravel.
