Plato wins on MG debut

1 April 2012

Jason Plato secured a dream victory for MG on its return to the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship with the win in race three at Brands Hatch – making him the early championship leader in the process.

In a race that had to restarted after oil dropped by the Ford Focus of Mat Jackson led to a multi-car accident at Druids just three laps in, Plato battled his way to the front before forcing his way through past the Honda of Andrew Jordan.

Despite Jordan's best efforts to respond, Plato was able to pull away through the closing laps of the race to secure a first MG victory since 2007, when Colin Turkington won at Donington Park.

Jordan had to settle for second place in his Pirtek Racing-run Civic while Dave Newsham made up for the earlier disappointment of his retirement from race one by taking first podium for ES Racing.

Gordon Shedden was fourth for Honda but a miserable weekend for the Scot continued when he was then excluded from the results after unauthorised work was carried out on his car during the red flag stoppage. That promoted Jeff Smith up to a career best fourth, ahead of Rob Austin's Audi and the BMW of Rob Collard.

The earlier accident at Druids had seen pole-sitter Ollie Jackson, Tom Onslow-Cole, Dan Welch and Adam Morgan all forced to retire – the latter being left particularly disappointed after the Speedworks team had worked hard to repair damage he picked up in an accident in race one.
