Jackson wins red-flagged opener

29 April 2012

Mat Jackson took victory in the opening Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship race in terrible conditions at Thruxton.

Jackson stormed to the front off the start and pilled out at handy lead over the chasing pack behind, although it looked like his advantage had been removed when team-mate Liam Griffin went off at Allard to bring out the Safety Car.

However, when the recovery vehicle moving Griffin's Redstone Racing Ford Focus got stuck on the wet grass, the race was red-flagged, handing Jackson his second victory of the season.

Newsham secured a second podium of the season for ES Racing in second place while third went to Jason Plato, who had to fight back from a trip across the grass on lap one after contact with poleman Andy Jordan going through Allard for the first time. Jordan would retire after going into the barrier.

Outside the top three, Rob Collard was fourth for eBay Motors ahead of Frank Wrathall's Toyota, while Gordon Shedden took a battle-scarred Honda from 18th on the grid to finish sixth.

Aside from Jordan and Smith, Adam Morgan and Rob Austin also retired while the Proton of Dan Welch failed to take the start after stopping on its way to the grid.
