Turkington storms to opening win
23 June 2013
Colin Turkington secured his second victory of the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship season with a dominant win in the opening race of the weekend at Croft.
The eBay Motors man had started from pole position and held the lead off the line on the soft compound Dunlop tyre. From there, he wouldn't be headed and pulled away at the front , eventually taking the chequered flag nearly ten seconds clear of the chasing pack.
Matt Neal held second off the line despite the best efforts of a fast-starting Rob Collard and – like Turkington – would stat in the same position to the finish. Collard however suffered a spin at Hawthorn after contact with Jason Plato's MG and slipped down outside the top 20.
Plato held third for the first lap but was then passed by Gordon Shedden at Tower, with the defending champion chasing his Honda team-mate home to the finish.
Behind them, a charging Nick Foster came through from twelfth on the grid to fourth having battled his way up the field, again on the soft compound tyre. Plato faded back to fifth, with Andy Jordan rounding out the top six.
Sam Tordoff was seventh with Michael Caine battling hard in the debuting Addision Lee Motorbase NGTC Ford to take eighth. A recovering Collard and Tom Onslow-Cole then completed the top ten, while Jack Sears Trophy honours went to debutant Jake Hill, who saw off the challenge of David Nye and Lea Wood amongst the S2000 drivers.
