Gareth Howell secured victory in the opening race of Finals Day for the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship at Silverstone as Team Halfords team-mate Matt Neal
secured his second straight championship crown.
Howell led from start-to-finish in the race to claim a comfortable victory ahead of Colin Turkington, with Tom Chilton
completing the podium. Knowing that he only had to finish ahead of Jason Plato
to secure the title, Neal wasn't keen to just sit for points and was involved in a battle with the SEATs of both Darren Turner
and James Thompson – Thompson following him over the line in fifth although Turner would retire after being punted into the gravel at the end of the National straight.
Gordon Shedden rounded out the top six ahead of Fabrizio Giovanardi
while Jason Plato
was forced to settle for eighth place – not able to make up the positions needed to keep the championship alive into the second race of the weekend.
Mike Jordan and Rob Collard
completed the top ten with the field now preparing for two races where there is nothing to lose with the championship decided. It promises to be interesting...
