Round 30: Howell ends Integra reign with win

15 October 2006

Gareth Howell brought the curtain down on Team Halfords relationship with the Honda Integra with a victory in the final race of the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship season at Silverstone.

Howell, who had earlier won the opening race of the day, hit the front early on in the race after battling past pole-sitter Paul O'Neill and was then able to successfully survive two Safety Car periods to fend off the challenge of Colin Turkington for his third BTCC win.

Turkington was forced to settle for second place on what is likely to be his final outing in the MG ZS, although it wasn't a result good enough to put him ahead of Jason Plato for second in the championship standings while Tom Chilton rounded out the podium for VX Racing. Plato claimed fourth despite his SEAT Leon sustained significant damage in race two, with James Thompson overcoming a similar problem to finish fifth ahead of Darren Turner.

Rob Collard ended his season with a seventh place finish ahead of Tom Ferrier in the Motorbase SEAT Toledo with Paul O'Neill and Gavin Smith completing the top ten.

Matt Neal failed to start the race due to a mechanical problem but with the championship already secured it proved to be academic – with Team Halfords successfully defending all four of its titles and SEAT clinching the manufacturers' crown for the first time.
