Kane secures maiden win

Steven Kane celebrates a maiden victory in the BTCC in the final race of the weekend at Thruxton
Steven Kane secured his maiden victory in the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship in the final race at Thruxton as Airwaves BMW ended the weekend with a 1-2 finish.

Kane started the race from second on the grid behind the similar BMW of Rob Collard and ran second behind his former team-mate for the opening seven laps of the race.

Despite trying on a number of occasions, Kane was unable to find a way through into the lead but came under pressure from behind from the Honda of Matt Neal. When Neal attempted to go round the outside of both Kane and Collard at the chicane on lap seven, contact with Collard's car saw both forced to retire and left Kane out front when the Safety Car was deployed.

On the restart, Kane was able to keep the lead ahead of team-mate Mat Jackson and the pair brought home a 1-2 finish for the Motorbase-run outfit, with Jason Plato securing third in his Silverline Chevrolet Cruze.

Gordon Shedden stormed through from eleventh on the grid to take fourth and his first points finish of the season, while Fabrizio Giovanardi added a fifth place finish to his earlier two wins to leave the opening rounds as point leader.

Paul O'Neill was sixth for sunshine.co.uk ahead of Team Aon pairing Tom Onslow-Cole and Tom Chilton, with Alex MacDowall and Dave Pinkney rounding out the top ten.

Elsewhere, Andy Neate and Matt Hamilton took eleventh and twelfth ahead of Tom Boardman – who saw his hopes of points ended by a puncture – and Andy Jordan, who had to settle for 14th after a troubled run.
