Shedden takes first win of the year

Gordon Shedden wins his first race of 2013 as the action kicks off at Donington Park
Gordon Shedden took the first win of his Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship title defence with a straightforward victory in race one at Donington Park.

Shedden held the lead from pole when the lights went out at the start and was never headed as he led him fellow Honda men Andrew Jordan and Matt Neal – although Jordan did start to put the leader under pressure during the closing laps before settling for second.

Neal saw off Jason Plato for third despite the MG man doing his best to close on his rival as the race wore on, while behind there was another strong result from Adam Morgan who brought his Ciceley Racing Toyota to the flag in fifth – benefitting from a heated battle between Frank Wrathall and Sam Tordoff that saw the pair run off track at the Old Hairpin to get ahead of both.

Tordoff would come out on top of his fight with Wrathall to take sixth, with Colin Turkington's eBay Motors BMW following the duo home in eighth. Dave Newsham and Jeff Smith rounded out the top ten – the latter having battled his way up the pack as the race wore on after a tough start.

Those on the soft Dunlop tyre, which was expected to be quicker over the race, struggled for pace, with Aron Smith the best placed in eleventh.

Jack Sears Trophy honours went to James Kaye ahead of Liam Griffin.
