Rockingham Motor Speedway: Austin takes first win

Rob Austin opens his BTCC win account in race two at Rockingham
Rob Austin opened his account in the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship with victory in the second race of the weekend at Rockingham.

The Audi man jumped from third to first on the opening lap of the race and was able to control proceedings from the front to take top honours ahead of Gordon Shedden, who worked his way to second but couldn't catch the leader and had to settle for second.

The podium was completed by Colin Turkington who earned his latest top three finish with a move on Mat Jackson with two laps to go. Jackson had to settle for fourth ahead of a charging Sam Tordoff with Jason Plato rounding out the top six.

For former points leader Matt Neal, it turned out to be another race to forget after the Honda man was forced to retire mid-way through after running straight on at Deene.

His Honda tagged the rear of Rob Collard's BMW, with the eBay man having run wide with a puncture that would also see him then retire to the pits.

Lea Wood again won the S2000 class and will take the Jack Sears Trophy title if he repeats his success in race three.

Get in Rob! One for the fans for sure. It's been coming and hopefully the first of many. One of the few characters in the BTCC paddock who genuinely seems to care about his fan base. Could see how much it meant to him and the whole team on the slowing down lap. And also made a change from the usual Neal, Jordan, Plato, Shedden victories.
