James Thompson claimed a shock win in the BTC Feature race at Brands Hatch, overtaking and then holding off works Vauxhall driver Jason Plato by just 0.5secs after 53 laps of racing.
The Egg: Sport driver headed a Vauxhall top three with rookie Phil Bennett finishing third, while Steve Soper was the top Peugeot driver in fourth – 42.429secs off Thompson.
The Thompson/Plato duel was the talk of Brands Hatch following their gripping wheel-to-wheel battle for the race lead, after the retirement of Sprint race winner, and then leader, Yvan Muller.
The Frenchman's Triple Eight run Astra had hit mechanical problems just before he was due to make his compulsory pit stop, and he elected not to continue.
In the Production class, Sprint race winner Simon Harrison was also unable to claim a double victory due to no fault of his own, when a wheel fell off his HTML run Peugeot 306 with just five laps to go, handing victory to Honda Accord driver James Kaye.
