In a perfect world there would be enough manufacturer and private funding to choose your drivers. But the fact is that in this day and age the teams do not have that choice. Despite its popularity the BTCC is on ITV 4, and does not have the profile available as on ITV 1 in the Super Touring days. Sponsorship is business and has to justify itself. If any of the teams in the BTCC had the luxury of not having to accept pay drivers to survive, we would currently have 2 drivers left in the BTCC.! This is unfortunately the same throughout Motorsport and up to F1 level. If **** Bennetts at WSR thought he could take the gamble and still pay the wages and infrastructure, or had any significant funding from BMW, I am sure he would choose his drivers based on talent. Meanwhile, we are where we are!
