Karting star Samuel Oram-Jones surpassed expectations last week when he made his debut in a Formula Ford car at Brands Hatch.
The 16-year-old is hoping to make the step up to compete in the 2014 Dunlop MSA Formula Ford Championship and during the test on the 1.929 kilometre Brands Indy Circuit he soon showed he could be one to watch, even if he will probably be the youngest competitor on the grid. Running with Jamun Racing, he notched up around 120 laps in total, and although there were no official times, unofficially his best effort was a 46.3 second lap, which compared very favourably to the other eleven competitors on track.
Following that test, he then ran at Snetterton the following day and again did well, completing 80 more tours, his best a 1 minute 51.6 second: “My times came down massively from the start of the two tests to the end and we were extremely happy with the end result,” said Sammy, who recently passed his ARDS test at Silverstone to earn the Formula B licence he needs to compete in Formula Ford. “The first day at Brands was really just to get use to the car and while I had driven there before, it was over two years ago as part of a Formula BMW Talent Cup test. In the end we weren't far off the fastest laps being set by the other cars on the circuit and those were times being posted by drivers with a lot more experience than me.”
“We then went to Snetterton and we felt that went well too,” Sammy added. “Obviously it is a much more demanding circuit and much longer. But we got down to a pace that we felt would be good for a driver currently driving in the championship. That was amazing for us as we had never been there before. We never really did a fast run on new tyres either and so when we get down to doing that we will find a lot of time and should be right at the top.”
“Overall I felt over the two days I got to know the team very well and they worked extremely well with me. The car I had was amazing and I built up a lot of confidence. I'm looking forward now to some more tests and hopefully to racing in Formula Ford this season,” Sammy continued.
James Mundy, team manager at Jamun Racing, meanwhile was impressed with how Sammy performed in the squad's Formula Ford car: “We had a great two days working with Sammy. His enthusiasm and natural speed has given us all a real buzz. Sammy worked hard at Brands to achieve a competitive lap time which surpassed all our expectations and followed that up by beating the lap times set by our 2013 driver line up at Snetterton the next day.
“We finished our first two days working together on real high. It was great to see Sam grow in confidence with the car and see him rewarded with lap times that would have placed him in the top half of last year's qualifying session.”
Sammy is now hoping to confirm his programme over the next few weeks in the countdown to the opening round of the 2014 Dunlop MSA Formula Ford Championship at Brands Hatch on March 29-30.
A number of unique sponsorship opportunities are available with Sammy and anyone interested should contact either The Sports PR Company on +44 (0)207 434 3392 or Sammy's father, Emil on +44 (0)7950 584034.
