WS: Rossiter joins Pons

Far from being constrained by his Honda F1 development deal, James Rossiter will join Spaniard Celso Míguez in the Pons Racing World Series by Renault team this season.

Having tested with various GP2 teams before the winter break, Rossiter had been expected to try and jump into the Formula One feeder series, but has since re-adjusted his sights and joined the team that took Heikki Kovalainen to World Series glory. Miguez, meanwhile, stays on board with Sito Pons squad for a second season.

"This is a terrific opportunity for me," 22-year old Rossiter admitted, "The World Series is a highly competitive championship but, with a top team like Pons Racing behind me, I am ready for the challenge."

Rossiter thanked long-time backer Celerant for helping him make the move from F3, where he competed in last year's Euroseries, and insisted that he was ready to repay those who have shown faith in his ability by following previous series champions Ricardo Zonta, Franck Montagny, Kovalainen and Robert Kubica towards F1.

"I am grateful to Celerant Consulting for their continued support, and I shall continue to work hard to pay back the trust they have placed in me," he said, "I am very excited about the new season and can't wait to get behind the wheel and start testing."

Team boss Pons is no stranger to talent, not least his own, having taken on Kovalainen, Miguez and Adrian Valles in the few years since setting up his four-wheel racing operation. Kovalainen and Valles secured the team title in 2004, while the Spaniard went on to secure runners-up honours last season.

"James is a highly talented and motivated young driver," Pons said of his new charge, "His ongoing activities with the Honda F1 team will continue to assist him greatly in his development as a driver, and we are confident that, guided by our experienced technical team, he will withstand the pressure and waste no time in achieving the results everyone expects of him."
