Prema makes Franchi first signing
16 February 2006
F3 Euroseries regular Greg Franchi has become Prema Powerteam's first signing for the World Series by Renault, following its accession to the series on the back of DAMS' withdrawal.
As first reserve after the WSR entry was confirmed last season, Prema got the nod when Jean Paul Driot's squad decided to concentrate on its GP2 and A1 Grand Prix commitments, but has waited until now to make its first driver commitment, having not been able to assess talent during last year's winter tests.
Franchi arrives on the back of a successful second season in the Euroseries which, despite placing only 17th in the standings, with Prema, included several strong showings, notably on home soil at Spa-Francorchamps.
"I am very pleased to be able to announce that Greg has signed with us," admitted team boss Angelo Rosin, "I am convinced that, together, we can do a good job in a category which is new for both of us. We are all working hard to get ready for the season, having now taken delivery of our cars from DAMS."
Franchi was happy not only to have stepped up to the next level on his personal racing ladder, but also to have managed to maintain some continuity by staying with Prema.
"It is good that I am able to progress on this new adventure in a superior category with the same team that I ran with last year," the 23-year old Belgian admitted, "The team has incredible staff and I could not find a better solution to continue my career. I can't wait to get back on track for the first tests with the new car in March."
