WS: Comtec signs Jowsey

After all the speculation about who would fill the seats at Comtec Racing Team United Kingdom in the past week or so, Jonathan Lewis' squad has made relative unknown Edwin Jowsey his first signing for the team's World Series by Renault debut.

Although Susie Stoddart had been expected to fill one seat at the Norfolk-based team, her defection to the DTM with Mercedes left Lewis with two vacancies and, according to the rumour mill, more than enough candidates to fill them. Jowsey, however, was not listed among the favourites for a drive.

The 19-year old Yorkshireman has an impressive motorsport record despite his tender years, but many took his testing appearance in the World Series car before Christmas as a toe-in-the-water exercise rather than a serious attempt to land a place on the grid. Comtec, however, clearly thought different, and has inked the teenager for its inaugural WS campaign.

Among Jowsey's achievements are five Historic Gold Cup wins, and he has found success at every level of motorsport he has tried, notably Formula Ford when not racing historics.

“It's a great opportunity I've been given in joining the World Series by Renault," he enthused, "It is a very professional championship, with professional teams and drivers.

"In joining Comtec Racing, I will be working with people who have a great wealth of motor racing experience and knowledge. I would like to thank Mr Moncheur and Jonathan Lewis in giving me this fantastic opportunity, and I hope to be able to repay the faith shown by my sponsors and family by achieving some point-scoring results in my first season. Hopefully, I will then be able to put that experience to good use in my goal of winning the World Series in my second season in 2007."

Comtec expects to announce its second driver in due course, with the same list of candidates in the running.
