Hamilton takes new favourite tag in stride.

Lewis Hamilton may be the nailed-on favourite to land the BBC's Sports Personality of the Year Award, but the McLaren driver insists that he is not expecting to hear his name read out when the ceremony takes place next month.

He should be given the "Choke of the Year" award! He did it once in Shanghai and twice in Brazil. Lost a 17 point lead in the WDC... he's also my hands-down choice for "loser of the year"!

quite right James toesland is a world champion in a free for all, clean fighthing series against some great great riders. so would deserve it more for sure. he wont get it tho.

despite what the article says, i am pretty sure hill won it in 94 and mansell in 86 when they both failed to win the title. and again when they won it.

Alan says: 'he's also my hands-down choice for "loser of the year"'.

I say: So loosing the WDC by 1 point (due to car failure) in your first attempt at trying makes you looser of the year?

I hate to think how you view the other drivers who finished behind Hamilton who've had years of experience.

Presumably the death penalty is appropriate?

If lewis wins sports personality of the year, something is seriously wrong somewhere. His personality unfortunately has some serious flaws & he comes across quite unlikeable & *****. I think people should vote for joe calzaghey as he has actually won something & quite a few times as well!

Car failure? He botched an unnecessary overtaking move on Alonso then pressed the "start sequence" button on his car? if that's not choking then i dunno what is. The Shanghai pit approach wasn't car failure also.

The reason why alot of people don't really like him and can't put his errors off as "rookie mistakes" is that Loser Hamilchoke is arrogant and has this air of self-entitlement. Sutil's, Kovalainen's and other racers mistakes are often overlooked or atleast forgiven because they don't pass themselves off as know-it-all god's-gift-to-racing kind of guys. All the talk that LH has been doing can't be backed up by his driving.. and that makes him a loser in my book!

Whatever you think of Hamilton, please remember his first year has been better, than Senna's,Clark,Fangio,Moss M.Schummacer,Prost,Stewart etc,so give him a bit of slack. The young man has done really well.Im not aHamilton fan,but he adds excitement to the races.
Just hope Button is up there too next year, more Brits at the front, lol

The only reason he's had a better rookie year than other drivers is because he was fortunate enough to have some kind of daddy love thing going on with Ron & got the best car in his first season. Any other driver with the same opportunities would do the same thing in my opinion.

Better first year than Fangio?! Fangio won all three of the races he finished. How about Moss? He spent his first year driving crappy old Connaughts, ERAs, HWMs etc that broke. Jackie Stewart had to drive a BRM!!!!

I could mention them all but, really, Hamilton didn't do his first year in the same circumstances as these drivers now did he?

Alot of people have forgotten that the only other driver who has had a rookie season that was as good as Hamilton is Jacques Villeneurve and he pushed his team mate Damon Hill all the way only for Hill to win the title and that was only 11 years ago and I am amazed that has been overlooked. Hamilton has given Formula 1 the new superstar it needs and as a Marketing man as a Formula 1 fan. He is He will bring a new audience to Formula 1 as he is black and a young audience as he is only 22. The other candiate for SPoY is the boxer Joe Calzaghe. 10 years SuperMiddleweight champion. 21 successful defences and unbeaten in 44 fights with 31 knockouts.

quite right Iain, plus james toesland too, more people went to brands this year to see him than they did to see lewis. as they used to for Carl, but sadly no one cared. Both great world champs for Britain

There is no possible way Hamilton should be given this award. His OWN mistakes blew a seemingly insurmountable lead in the driver's championship. That lead was built up more on the strength of the McClaren car, than on the strength of either hamilton's driving ability or character, both of which have been greatly exagerated.
