US GP set for 2009 return?

US GP set for 2009 return?

Despite disappearing form the Formula 1 calendar following the 2007 race, the US Grand Prix could be in line for a shock return to the schedule as early as next year – as long as it makes financial sense.

F1 simply can't compete with NASCAR in the US, If F1 wants to have a presence in the US there need to be more then the one race there (it's too big a place only one) and it need's to be subsided in the early years.

BE and the FOA aren't making a profit so he wants a return from every venue and isn't looking long term on anything, only sponsor pressure will encourage the FOA to take a more serious approach rather then the half-hearted efforts of the past.

When was David Hobbs a "grand prix ace"? Epic lulz.

If F1 is to return to the states then i'd prefer if it wasnt at Indy to be honest. Would prefer a street race in Vegas / Miami / Long Beach perhaps. Never really enjoyed any of the races that took part at Indy.

Agreed, Indy sucks. Watching cars go around that "circuit" is about as exciting as watching golf.

Yes, a street race would be great but I also would like to see races at circuits such as Infeneon Raceway, Road America, Sebring, and the best of all, Watkins Glen. Maybe alternating venues throughout the states would be a good idea in my opinion.

It needs a street race. It doesn't work at Indy because it is the 3rd big event there in the year, so the fans aren't going to turn out in the masses when they could go to the 500 instead. A street race would capture more imaginations and there are sooooo many exciting places where it could happen too!

All the F1 manufaturer teams want to race in America because it is one of their biggest markets. Bernie doesn't because they won't pay the mega-bucks he wants. I find it obscene that Bernie demands so much money that there is no way a track hosting a Grand Prix can make a profit unless they have government backing.
The F1 Teams should have a lot more say in the process than they seem to have at the moment---without them Bernie would still be selling second hand cars (probably Rollers I will admit!)

I think that Peter Windsor nailed it right on the head!!
But regarding to a track, Laguna Seca would be fantastic since I think it;s one of the best tracks in the world in terms of the track itself... would love to see the F1 cars comming down the cork-screw...
Road America would be my second choice...

My prediction is that there will not be an F1 race in the states. The tracks mentioned above although excellent venues are not up to F1 standards. It would take additional funds besides the millions and millions needed and thats just not going to happen. The fact is that F1 is not user friendly. And besides Bernie says he can live without a race in the states.

I don't see why there shouldn't be a race in the US again. It will be good for the automotive industry besides it's a huge market for Mercedes, Honda and Toyota.

the problem with road circuits in USA are that they are pretty short, even though there are some good tracks there.
i think f1 should bring back the US east and west gp's, like they did in 1970's-80's. maybe use laguna seca and the daytona circuit like in indianapolis, only shorter and probably slightly more fun.

p.s, would also like to see motegi get a GP, both oval and circuit during same weekend. that would make history.

actually there is an alternative to Indy's track. It is a facility currently in the final design stages and located in a resort area just outside LA. The Southern California market with its strong fan base, large population count, and this new state of the art facility being designed by the worlds fore most F-1 track designers and engineers, is without question the ideal facility to host the next F-1 event. Neither drivers nor team marketing personnel want to return to Indy, it's just not condusive to a race that deserves far more. An F-1 event has so much to offer to the fans, viewing public and the World. Get your Motor runnin.... California is the place it ot' to be....

Been a fan of F1 since it started to run in Rio. Living in the USA makes it very hard to keep up with the circus, all info is through the net. It would be great to have a race somewhere in the US, chances are it won't. Bernie has to remember how FUN it was to be part of F1, remember Brabham Mr. Ecclestone? F1 needs more people who actually enjoy working there, and show it, Jo Ramirez is missed daily for his diplomacy, enthusiasm and devotion to the sport. Politics and money are a major part of the game, agreed, but if they play front stage all the time, it becomes boring. F1 in oval circuits does not work, but America does have circuits of great standard, they're not hard to find!

Formula 1 has struggled to get thr crowds and the viewing figures in America because it has to compete with

1: NASCAR
2: IndyCar
3: American Le Mans Series
4: AMA.

I don' think INdy would work and neither with Daytona because while Daytona has an infield track like INdy I think the teams would struggle to setup the car with the steepness at Daytona which is 31 degrees. But I think Sebring or Laguna Seca would be quite popular with the fans.

The US has some great circuits, both street and track, which used to be used for CART. Now, sadly departed. It's a pity that they're not used by F1. I agree that Indy isn't the best.

I remember a circuit that used to be an airfield, Cleveland, I think. Nice and wide for overtaking, although it was a bit bumpy.

If they raced more in the US, maybe there'd be some interest to start up some US teams. And I have to say that F1 cars look way cooler than IRL cars.

A few observations from a Californian and long time (from the 60's GP fan)A GP at Laguna Seca ? No thanks - remember when CART fans were still on the single lane road trying to get into the track when the race ended - may be a great track to race but a miserable track to enter. Street races ? No thanks - "saw" all the F1 races at Long Beach - actually didn't see much other than concrete walls and buildings. Las Vegas ? An absolute joke of a race - Vegas is gambling and everthing else will always be a foot note. A reurn to Indy? I hope so. A city that is race focused with many support events (including down town auto shows) Great auto musems throughout the state and great covered bridges.
