Honda backs Bridgestone tyre-warming view.

Honda backs Bridgestone tyre-warming view.

Despite claims from a number of Formula 1's high-profile drivers – Michael Schumacher, Felipe Massa and Nico Rosberg amongst them – that the lack of tyre-warmers for Bridgestone's 2009-spec slick rubber will lead to dangers in the races [see separate story – click here], Honda has supported the Japanese tyre manufacturer's contention that any such fears are overstated.

I bet if it were Michellin he wouldn't be as diplomatic. To have the likes of Schumacher, Massa and Rosberg seriously concerned about the safety factor is a worry and once again those who make these decisions obviously don't drive these cars therefore don't understand. All the teams already have the blankets so their reasoning of cost cutting is a farse. It really doesn't make sense to get these guys hopes up that they will be using slicks again but you can't pre heat them is just a sick joke.

here we go again, "another " story about tyre warmers. they are NOT neccessary. every other race series can manage without them. just get on with the driving and drive within your, and your cars, capabilities. lack of use will INCREASE prospects of passing

Has anyone considered the possibility of drivers doing the nose-weave *in the pit lane* to try and get some warmth in the rubber before throwing it out on track? Its pretty extreme, but if drivers are seriously worried they'll do anything to get some grip back.

I'm afraid I'm in the 'keep the heat' party on this one. Losing warmers will have minimal effects on passing and costs - having slicks and less aero is going to have the major effect on overtaking, which is what we want. Its easy to characterise drivers as prima donnas, but the real issue isn't handling so much as speed differentials, which is much less of a problem in other series.

Errrm, Rosby, can you explain why speed differential is much less of a problem in other series?
Personally, I see no problem and agree with rich. How is it any different from a car going off the circuit, picking up gravel, sand, mud or even tyre cooling wet grass and then coming back onto the circuit and having to reduce speed until the tyres are up to temp again? It isn't really that dissimilar is it?
