Team bosses back securing British GP, but...

While the 2010 switch from Silverstone to Donington Park made the headlines on the opening day of the British Grand Prix, the consensus of opinion within the paddock was that the choice of venue was secondary to ensuring that the race remained on the Formula One calendar.

1 people agree.  1 people disagree.

If Silverstone is not good enough for the british grand prix, Why go and ruin Donington Park a good bike track!
Surely Brans Hatch would be a suitable place instead, if silverstone is not up to Bernies liking!
Bernie is trying to take the fun away from us bike racing fans, by ruining a good bike track!
Its not our fault if bike racing is more entertaining than F1!
So there is no need to use one our main racing tracks, now i hear motogp could go to Silverstone?
How boring from a spectators point of view!
But at least the action will great!

"I think several of the new circuits have raised the standards in terms of facilities, in terms of the quality of circuit, but I think, for me personally, having been in racing a long time, it's still nice to have character to a circuit, to have a spirit."

That's an important point by brawn. While all the new circuits we have seen over the last few years may have great facilities, the only one which has anything close to a half decent track is Turkey. The rest are clinical, lifeles,s bland "tinkledromes". I'd rather see the race go to brands which is IMO the best circuit in the UK, along with Cadwell Park. However Cadwell is totally unsuitable for international racing.

Persoanlly though, F1 has turned into a very unappealing form of motorsport. And if the poison dwarf wants to turn into Formula Middle East & Asia thats fine with me.

i agree with u both. Brands would be the better place by a distance.

Donnigton is a good circuit, but compare when all 3 hold the wsbks, which is the best venue ? Brands. plus its close for people to come from europe and london. if they made the train station 3 miles closer u wouldnt even need to drive or ride there.(cos thats a long walk up that hill lol)

Lets not forget Brands was promised the F1 race in 2000, for 2003 onwards but bernie gave silverstone more time. brands probably lost alot of money over that. for that reason i doubt Palmer would even want F1. i think i even remember him saying recently its not worth it.

They can be happy with the fact they still hold the best motorsport weeekend in great britain with the superbikes.

FooAtari and Brendan, good comments there.
There maybe one good thing about the F1 going to Donington, perhaps the roads to the track and the parking will be improved?, But Apart from that the FIA will ruin a good old track and make it corporate boring!
I was at donington For the MotoGP this year and there was 90000 there i was told on the day but really it was 88000. thats more than lasts years attendance and it beats the attendance of the F1 at silverstone last year!
Yet at Brands when WSBK goes there you get over 100000 fans there and theres good vantage points and facilities there, plus getting in and out the place is easier now they have improved things. which is more than donington.

BYE BYE British GP. Bernie / Max get their own way, fans complain because of facilities etc and attendances drop.... perfect excuse.

SAY NO MORE

silverstone lost the gp because the brdc built a new club house a few years ago rather than making the track better!

I just don't think Donington will be able to get everything in place in time for it to happen!!

Announcing the change of the eve of this weekends race is a major F U to the BRDC. This is very tacky.

Bernie wouldn't dare simply drop the British GP. The management at Donnington have bitten, despite common sense, because I'm sure Bernie himself offered the £100m 'private investment'. Bernies no fool, and he knows that it will take two years just to get the planning permission. Donnington will get listed this time next year as the provisional 2010 venue, but then will get dropped from the calendar for not having the facilities available on time. That way, it costs Bernie 0.00p the British GP gets dropped, by which time he may well have tied up a cheapo purchase of Silverstone which is what he's wanted all along.

I dont understand, if Bernie gave Silverstone the choice of either upgrading their track or losing the grand prix, and Silverstone chose to upgrade their track extensively, why are they losing the grand prix?
It's amazing how much power Eccelstone has, getting companies to spend millions on ultimately frivilous endevours...

Bernie gave the BRDC loads of time to improve the curcuit but failed, If donington can hold the Motogp why not F1? as long as they don't get Tilke in to do a redesign and keep to the sprit of the original track whats the problem. I was too young to seen the race in 1993 but i would love to see F1 cars going down the Cranners!

The poison dwarf only accepted Donington because they crossed his palm with gold. The BRDC were never in with a chance,it was not about facilities, that was a ruse,it was about coughing up huge amounts of cash to provide more bimbo's for the dwarf. He asked the Government to step in to give him the money,he's tried to hold the government to ransome.Let the GP go and F1 and lets break away from wiggy and his sideshow.F1 will survive without BE,he's an ****,who demands huge fees for his procession, dump it and restart with a breakaway.Silverstone will survive because they have good facilities and it is run by enthusiasts, but is also a business and has to account for its expenditure, good on them!

At Donington fot MotGP, It once took me 3 hours to get from the car park to the exit!! That was with 75000 fans on race day, most of whom were on bikes!!! How the hell do they think they will get 100,000 F1 fans in and out in cars??!!!

A little off with your numbers there I think. MotoGP race day was 88,000 and Im fairly sure Silverstone put 80,000 tickets up for sale for f1 race day.

The year I'm talking about was reported at 75000 but I'm sure you get my point. Even if you take away say, 25000 bikes and replace them with cars, the nightmare just got worse. The traffic situation at Donington is appalling and each year they say 'it will be much better next year' and it never is. The spectator facilities are abysmal and if it rains, the place turns into a bog.
