Having clinched a second World Superbike Championship title, James Toseland could be set for more silverware after being named on the ten person shortlist for the BBC 'Sports Personality of the Year'.
Its about time that the Double World Superbike Champion got the credit he so rightly deserves. JT all the way. I appreciate that people like different sports but can someone please tell me why Lewis Hamilton is everyones favourite. What exactly has he done. Agreed he has had a great debut season in F1, but, and its a big but, he totally bottled it in the final race. And lets be honest, the guy has NO personality. In years to come, I have no doubt that he will become F1 Champion, and he will no doubt win the SPOTY in the future. But the contest is for 2007 and JT has achieved so much more. If JT can't win because of the politics within the BBC, then its Joe Calzaghe..

Even though JT is a world champion at his sport he has absolutely no chance of winning this. Unlike other countries, in Britain motorcycle racing is only popular with a small minority and receives very little media exposure. Now if he was a show jumper then he would be a dead cert. As a Yorkshireman I fully support JT but in this instance my vote must go to Joe Calzhage, 10 years as WC beating the best in the world - no contest really!

Hawkeye,i agree with you.BBC have chosen 10 people for sports personality and ive just watched the preview,no mention of Toseland.Paula Radcliffe is chosen and shes only raced 2 races.Wilkinson has only played a few world cup games,he's in??? Murray has been injured most of the year,he's in??? Even footballers were shown and there aren't any footballers in the chosen 10??? Maybe if a member of the Royal family won the tiddly wink championship they would be a cert, lol Toseland or Calzhage should win,but of course will have no chance

Money has to be on Lewis Hamilton for the win, unlike the F1 title!!

Last bike rider to win it was Barry Sheene. Foggy never had a chance, I guess he didnt have a personality! That was not a problem for Steve Davis or Nigel Mansell though...

Has to be Lewis Hamilton, simply because his every move makes the front 3 pages in thee tabloids here. When JT won the double it was a tiny colum on page 36 of a couplee of tabloids.

Why has the money got to be on Lewis Hamilton. Just because his every move makes the papers. This is a vote by the public for their choice of SPOTY. Then again, it is a BBC phone vote and I can't see many people having much faith in them anymore.

JT did win the Look North TV sports personality in 2004 and he's up for it again this year so I will be voting for him. Fortunately the only Royal family we vote for up here is Ricky Tomlinsons lot...lol

if some of those 120,000 of us who went to brands to see the double vote for him then who knows, he does deserve it! biking should have more coverage esp when u consider the amount who turn up at brands every year, more than go to silverstone for the F1

Brendan, I couldn't agree with you more. Brands this year was amazing what with the double and JT's rendition of the National Anthem. I couldn't see the likes of Lewis Hamilton doing something like that at the F1 at Silverstone. To everyone who was there, or even if you just like bikes, or even if you just fancy JT (my wife tells me he's rather horny) lets all vote for him. And maybe, just maybe we could cause an upset.

I agree with you all. Unfortunately, motorcycle is a dirty word in the UK. I suspect someone who came second will win.

I couldn't agree more with the general consensus on here on this one. JT deserves to win it but let's face it, he won't. Carl Fogarty won 4 WSBK titles and I remember the guy interviewing him saying "Maybe if you win it for a 5th time you'll win the Sports Personality title!"
Did Barry Sheene ever win it? I thought in 76/77 it was James Hunt then Virginia Wade? (haha! F1 then Tennis! Can anyone see a pattern here?) BAH HUMBUG!
Now, if EVER there was a "Sports Personality" it was Barry Sheene!

Wow! Just checked. James Hunt was 2nd in 1976! Beaten by the "personality" of John Curry the ice skater. As I thought (unfortunately) Barry never won it. The last (and only time) a bike racer has won was WAY back in 1959 when John Surtees won!
Maybe if it was a toffs sport like Tennis and he NEVER WON ANYTHING like say, that great "personality" Gregg (I'm as British as Mapel Syrup) Rusedski he'd stand a chance. (1997 winner btw)
Bitter? Me? Naw...

who cares? the guy s a moto racing world champ, he doesnt need any pof those commercial awards. Like said, Barry didnt get it ... that doesnt make him a smaller figure at all

It's because it's voted for by the Public Chu, it's not a commercial award. That's why it's held in such regard by those that win it.

i see, thanks for clearing that one up Buellifull - well, again, LH or some footballer will get it. If not JT, i guess my vote would go for Paula Radcliffe. She s f unreal.

Fully agree with JT's place in the Top Ten I can't help wondering why Andy Priaulx hasn't been included.
1 European Championship followed by 3 World Championships in one of the most competitive categories around.
Doesn't make sense to me!!!!!

Agree with all of you... im sure a motogp seat is much better reward for his efforts than a pot some people have chosen to hand him!
Joe Calzaghe... I don't think he needs telling how good he is at what he does!
Maybe it goes to those people who just can't cut it so that their trophy shelf isn't empty at the end of the year! Andy Murray will be right up there then! not only is he crap at what he does, hes also a to$$er!
JT or Calzaghe deserve it, or as mentioned I think Priaulx should have been in there!
In fairness, what Paula Radcliffe does is amazing!

Wo Wo Wo Wo Wo,
Let me please just confirm what you are saying here. Posted by chu and paul. Paula Radcliffe is f unreal. That is what you put in writing. Can you please tell me, how many races this year. How many has she entered and actually completed. Without pissing at the side of the road. She is famous, or infamous, for that 1 reason. Please tell me that you think, someone who runs on a road/track deserved the title more than JT and what he has achieved this year. I'm a massive JT fan and I may be a little biased, but come on...... Stop talking *****...

Ratty your comment is retarded at best.Elite marathon runners run 3-4 races a year maximum. Lower salary guys run more, but the top guys, even less than that.Have u ever run one? Obviously not. Plus she had a child not long ago. Check how many races Stefano Baldini, Gebreselassie or any of the top guys have done this last season. Also, marathon is do or die. For someone with such a winning record it s either try to finish first or die trying.
