Toseland misses out.

Toseland misses out.

World Superbike champion James Toseland was unable to end his season in winning style after missing out on securing the BBC ‘Sports Personality of the Year' award.

Thankfully ( as a boxing fan also), I was pleased to see Joe get the award. Ten years a tough champion is deserving no?
Atleast it didn't go to cricket, rugby, football or athletics for a change

To come 4th in a sport that is not recognised on the BBC is a huge triumph for all bike fans. What an entrance JT made, on his bike, absolutely amazing. And then to play the piano like that. I have been lucky enough to meet him at the BSB meet at Donnington this year, and I can only say is what a down to earth, nice bloke he is.
Best of luck to JT in MotoGP next year. Lets just hope Yamaha do some work on the bike over the Winter...

He came very close to pulling off a minor upset by being within 800 votes of Ricky Hatton, who had received god knows how much publicity in the last week alone. Most people watching will have had no idea who JT was before he rode in.

Yup agreed, Joe was the right winner, such a shame the public like runner ups and not champions winning awards! :-P

Have to agree with Ratty, WHAT AN ENTRANCE!!! Nice to see him up there in 4th but like most of the comments i've read on other websites, motorcycle racing always seems to be left out! But at least he got up there and at last got recognition on tv for his achievment for his 2007 world championship. Looked bloody nervous before he went to play that piano though!!! Good look to JT for 2008!!!

As a Yorkshireman and a massive JT fan it was great to see him up there raising the profile of the sport, and what an impressive ambassador for motorcycling he his. But I think the public got it spot on by making Joe Calzaghe the SPOTY, 10 years as a world champion is an awesome achievement and he thoroughly deserves every bit of credit. Really hope JT does us all proud next year.

4th was pretty good considering WSBK wasn't even televised on terrestrial tv this year.

AS for Joe winning it? A bit of a Joke I'm afraid. He is a pretty average boxer in a crap division with few decent fighters. He needs to fight someone worthy, do what Hatton did and get over to America. We all know he will never do that though... Pretty sure he is managed by Frank Warren? He only puts his fighters against people he knows they can beat.

Did anyone else notice. When Joe won, the trophy in America had the shields with the previous winners on it. The one in London was blank. Fixed or what.

I was on the same flight as James on the way to the Valencia GP.For him it was 2hours solid of signing T-shirts,books,MCN's,boarding passes or anything else fans get with a smile on his face and a nice word for everyone.A champ on the track and a champ off it.

Boxing isn't a sport its barbarity, if two men start fighting anywhere outside of a boxing ring their quite rightly condemned for being animals and dealt with by the law, put them inside a ring and pay them ridiculous amounts of money and its called entertainment, what hypocrisy. The state of Hatton's face on Sunday evening said it all, their nothing but neaenderthals

His entrance was amazing, the sound of the bike in the studio was fantastic. As he was riding the bike onto the stage you could see Lewis Hamilton applauding and saying "that is cool" to his brother. Then he still manages to wow the crowd further by doing the piano piece - superb. All in all a great advert for motorcycle racing and a great champion of the sport.

James deserves more recognition for his 2 WSBK titles - which like MotoGP is a top motorsport class, built on sheer bravery and speed. Considering the other great sportsmen and women in contention it was great to see him 4th anyway - I should have voted more... Well done JT.

Have agree with most of you Joe did deserve the trophy, shame that JT did not get in the top three? Its time the public showed some surport to a great champion, hope he comes out fighting in 2008. And shows some of the GP boys the way to the flag, bring on 2008 it could be the best year yet.

For me the top three should have been Joe (as someone has said 10 years at the top in boxing, wow!), then Alan Priaux (sp?) - when will he get recognised for his stunning acheivements? - then Toesland. Stunning rider, always comes across as a genuinly nice bloke in interviews. Why not top for me? Just down to the consitent winning ways of the other two...

But at least Toseland came somewhere - Dario Franchitti - IRL and Indy 500 winner didn't even make the shortlist.

I couldn't understand why James would want to step up to MotoGP. After all no world superbike rider has ever enjoyed major success in the premier class. But then again James could be the first; he is definitely a talented rider, media savvy and ENGLISH. I salute James for his risk taking and turning his back on World Superbike. After all World Superbike is a very poor relation of MotoGP and only the Brit's and a few Ducati riding Italians can be bothered with the dismal series.

Franchitti and Priaulx (sp lol) both deserved to be in the top ten tbh. Calzaghe definitely deserved it given the oppostion, i voted for him. TBH Priaulx probably deserved it out of all the motorsportsmen...3 times world champ in a row. Least JT was recognised

Jacko,

In response. WSBK was the best thing to watch over the last season, it is not dismal and given how the last year has panned out you could hardly say it is a poor relation to GP. There are more and more manufacturers coming into it because they want to display and promote their PRODUCTION machines. Don't get me wrong i still love GP's but i'm much more excited by WSBK recently. Good luck to JT in GP and i'm glad he made the move and i hope he can prove that it is possible to switch from WSBK and be successful at it.
I don't see many teams gearing up to move into GP do you? Small grids and all it takes is a nasty accident and half the field is missing the following week....

....continued

whereas we could be seeing another 4-5 teams coming into WSBK in the next couple of years and the grid has already increased for next year. Sounding very rosey to me
