Lorenzo: I really didn't expect this!

Lorenzo: I really didn't expect this!

The reigning double 250cc world champion was a close second to Stoner in both sessions and eventually finished his first day as an official MotoGP rider just a fraction behind the Ducati star, after punching out a series of scorching laps towards the end of the second hour.

Early days but looks like Lorenzo may show Mr Rossi how to ride the Yamaha to its full potential. But of course if he beats Rossi it will be the superior Michelin tyres.
I am a Stoner fan I admit, but I can see the Yamaha challenge of Toseland, Lorenzo, even Edwards (and possibly even Rossi) making this a very interesting year

We all can see that the rookies are doing a great job and will try to do everything they can to show they belong in motogp. However, this is practice. Not the race, but practice. When the flag drops, we're going to see who ends up on top, Valentino Rossi!

Well as I said a long time ago... Rossi's "golden" era was when there were no "top quality" riders there except Rossi... this is why he was winning so easy.

Now we have: Rossi, Stoner, Lorenzo, Pedrosa.

I really hope Lorenzo makes his best... and kicks Rossi on the Yamaha. I expect him to target no more than pos 3 in the champ, maybe better.

Its really early days and only the first free practice but the one thing I noticed was the top three are all reigning world champions. Stoner,Lorenzo and Toseland. Lets hope we get a year of racing not lap times.

At least for Qatar the performance of the M-tires are overall much better then the B-tires. The only ones on top are Stoner & Rossi.

Qatar is a weird race. You cannot extrapolate this back 10 years or to future over a year on the back of Rossi never having had serious competition and always have had the best bike; Be serious...

By the way, how many kids are on this forum? (Sorry, but it shows) ;)

Spot on Harryx - Qatar is a very unique track - even if we get some major upsets on race day I expect to see normal service resumed over the course of the season.

Not a great fan of Lorenzo, but his consistency over many laps when he kept posting 1,2 & 3 fastest sector times was very impressive - as was JT (and Bradley Smith in the 125's).

Looks good for the season even if the MotoGP grid is a bit thin.

I don't think Lorenzo's being bashful or re-running a varient on the 'NO ONE expects the Spanish inquisition' (mind, there's a high proportion of Spanish riders doing well - says a lot about Biking's profile in differing countries too (shoot those 'Vision Zero' loons asap)). He probably didn't expect Suzuki to have gone off the pace, Hopper to be crippled, Honda to have F*d up engine development orRossi's tyre woes.
Result: Cos he's good in his own right he reaps the benefit.
