Pedrosa top 20, Rossi raises the bar.

Pedrosa made his grand prix debut in 2001 and his current victory count is split five (MotoGP), 15 (250cc) and eight (125cc). The Repsol Honda rider now needs just one more win to equal the tally of grand prix veteran Loris Capirossi, who made his GP debut back in 1990!

u can not compare them because the old 70s(and before) guys raced in many other series at the same time that dont count towards these list like 750, Superbike, transatlantic, king of brands etc etc that were just as important in their own right.

so guys like hailwood, surtees, Duke and Ago etc the number would be even larger.

On the other hand, riders often used to race in more than one class back then giving them a greater chance to rack up total wins/podiums quicker...

Yes and there was one well known rider way back riding a 4 cylinder machine when everyone else was on single cylinder..

Team Green, good point but the season its self was only about 7races so thats not really so. What people forget is the GP500 class its whats looked at because its the one the survived but it wasnt the stand out championship. there were lots more that dont fall under the Grand Prix Catagery. so tally is not on this list.

that werent his fault tho, werent no point on him putting the 3 cylinder MV away and getting on a single matchless.

Plus he had already beaten the Honda of another world champ, then would later win on the fast but handful beast that was the Yamaha. He was something special.

they cant be compared tho and its unfair on todays riders to compare them.

And today there is nothing stopping them riding in 125, 250 and motogp. but they dont like rider one week after another let alone 2 on the same day.

I believe Mike Hailwood once won 3 races of 3 different makes of bike on one day

Surtees once won a race on a MV, are Formula 3 car race and then got a second in a F1 race all the space of 2 weeks.

its not fair to compare riders of today to them, and bit foolish when todays commentators try to claim todays are better.

its now so different.

Actually, that's not true. It is not possible to race in 125, 250 and MotoGP as Dorna don't allow it. But you are right, you can't compare the riders of old - totally different situation/circumstance.

However, there is definitely a rider standing out in the current crop?

I think there's a subtle but very important difference between comparing success and comparing talent.

Conmparing success by listing victories, podiums and titles is completely acceptable and every rider dreams of being 'the most successful rider of all time' by winning more than anyone else.

However, it would be silly to somehow use a win/podium or even championship list as a direct measure of talent, which I think is was Brendan fears is being done. As well as the reasons mentioned, there's also career length, machinery, injuries etc

But I don't see a problem comparing success as 'a win is a win' and 'the cream always rises to the top'.
