Ekstrom dq'd, Green demoted for final lap fracas

Mattias Ekstrom has been disqualified from the results following the latest round of the DTM, while Jamie Green has been penalised, after officials punished them for their on-track manner in Barcelona.

Ekstrom had originally been given a 50-secs penalty, dropping him from fifth to ninth, for spinning Green at the first corner of the final lap.

However, with Ekstrom damaging his car in the process, Green caught back up with the Swede in the final complex, the Brit pushing him off the circuit in the process. Ekstrom retaliated by shoving Green through the chicane, the incident eventually resulting in the Mercedes sliding through the gravel and crossing the line eighth.

As such, Ekstrom has been removed from the results, while a 30secs penalty for Green drops him from what became seventh, to eighth. It means he still scores one point, while Ralf Schumacher gets promoted to seventh.

The ruling stated that Ekstrom's earlier indiscretion was the reason why his part in their contact resulted in a harsher penalty.

Unsurprisingly, Green was livid with Ekstrom, labelling the two-time champion 'unprofessional'.

“This was not really professional by Mattias Ekström. The collision when he ran into my car at the right rear and spun me around damaged my suspension, then he ran into my car a couple of times on this lap and pushed my off the track.”

Ekstrom spoke only of the initial collision, adding that he was surprised Green had not defended harder, thus resulting in the eventual contact.

“On the last two laps I wanted to overtake Jamie. He didn't block me and I was very surprised. When I was on the inside he turned in. Something on my car broke. On the last lap I was fighting just to finish the race.”
