Scheider expects battle royal |
Timo Scheider has admitted that he expects a tough battle at Hockenheim this weekend as he seeks to secure his maiden DTM title.
The Audi Sport Team Abt driver heads into the season finale with a slender two point advantage over Mercedes ace Paul di Resta and knows the Scot had to finish ahead of him on track to stand any chance of stealing the crown.
Scheider has gone well at Hockenheim in the past, and secured his first ever DTM podium during the corresponding fixture last season.
Having again finished on the podium in the opening round of this year, where he also took pole position, Scheider will now aim to wrap up the title although he admits it won't be an easy weekend on track.
"We scored a memorable one-two-three at the start of the season at Hockenheim, and history shows that the final races at Hockenheim have always gone well for me," he said. "I've actually always finished my years positively there, which is why I'm particularly pleased that the finale is held at Hockenheim.
"It definitely won't be plain sailing with just a two point lead over Paul, but in fact a battle royal. The many German fans in the stands will certainly act as extra motivation for me – it's all about the title."
Head of Audi motorsport Dr Wolfgang Ullrich agreed with his driver that an exciting weekend lies ahead and said he was hopeful that his team would come out on top.
"At the last race at Le Mans we already had the title in our hands until halfway through the race," he said. "Unfortunately, we couldn't fix it. This means there is now a big showdown at Hockenheim.
"The atmosphere will be fantastic. I'm convinced that the grandstands will be full. We'll do everything to bring the championship home for Audi."
