Mattias Ekstrom will start the latest round of the DTM season from pole after leading the way in qualifying at Valencia.
The Audi driver posted a quickest time of 1min 29.565secs during the final phase of qualifying which was enough to see him edge out the Mercedes of Bruno Spengler by just 0.016secs.
“I am really happy,” Ekstrom said. “I am feeling very well in the car, even though it is very hot. For the race, we have to keep our fingers crossed that the tyres will make it through the distance.”
British pairing Oliver Jarvis and Gary Paffett will share the second row of the grid with Paul di Resta and Mike Rockenfeller fifth and sixth – the duo quickest of those drivers now to make it through Q3. Miguel Molina and Alex Premat round out the top ten with the 2008-spec Audis having edge somewhat over the 2009 spec machines.
The pace of the older cars left Martin Tomczyk and Timo Scheider with work to do on race day after they failed to make it through Q2 – with David Coulthard falling at the same hurdle.
The ex-Red Bull Racing man will start from twelfth on the grid.
