Martin Tomczyk underlined BMW's raw speed by setting the fastest time of the day ahead of tomorrow's DTM qualifying at Brands Hatch.
The defending champion clocked a time of 42.415secs, placing him just ahead of championship leader Gary Paffett, who trailed by less than a tenth.
Christian Vietoris was next up, also in a Mercedes, ahead of Robert Wickens and last year's F3 Euro Series champion, Roberto Merhi.
Bruno Spengler and Augusto Farfus were the next best placed BMW's lodged in sixth and seventh position.
Mattias Ekstrom was Audi's best placed driver, posting a time good enough for eighth, just under two tenths off the ultimate pace.
Mercedes duo of Ralf Schumacher and Jamie Green rounded off a tightly packed top ten, both setting a time just two tenths off Tomczyk's pace.
Notably languishing further down the field was former double champion, Timo Scheider who finished Friday's running 14th and three tenths off the pace.
British hopefuls David Coulthard and Andy Priaulx trailed further in 16th and 17th respectively.
