Tomczyk: Strategy will be key

After a 'disappointing' qualifying session, BMW's Martin Tomczyk pins his hopes on a good start and race strategy in a bid to move himself up the order at Brands Hatch today.

BMW's Martin Tomczyk is placing his race hopes on a good start and strategy after qualifying a 'disappointing' fifth in yesterday's session at Brands Hatch.

The defending champion made a slight error through turn 2 (Druids), costing the German that vital one thousandth of second which would have propelled his BMW into the final one lap shootout.

“It was really disappointing for me,” Tomczyk told Crash.net. “I made a mistake in Q3 through turn 2 that cost me a place in Q4. The car was definitely good enough to fight for the pole today.”

Thanks to such a tightly packed grid and a notorious lack of overtaking around the Indy circuit, Tomczyk concedes a win maybe out of reach, but insists a podium could well be on the cards.

The 30-year old pointed out an extra new set of tyres along with a good start and making key strategic calls at the right time could move his BMW into a podium position.

“It's very difficult to overtake here in Brands,” Tomczyk explained. “The start will actually be the best opportunity to overtake someone but from there on, strategy and good pit stops will be the way to gain places.

“I have some new tyres left for today, so hopefully I can use them to gain time on track. A win maybe out of reach but a podium is definitely my goal."
