BMW: Exciting times ahead
19 April 2013
BMW believe the recent 'F1 style' rule changes to the DTM will lead to an exciting season for both the drivers and fans.
As with F1 the DTM organisers have implemented the use of the overtaking-aid device 'DRS' along with introducing the Hankook manufactured 'option tyre' which has been estimated to give a 1.5 second increase in performance with a projected tyre life of 40 kilometres.
The Munich-based manufacturer, who now enters the new season as defending DTM champions in the hands of Bruno Spengler, have given their seal of approval to the new rule changes given the testing that has been carried out on the new technology.
“We tested the DRS for the first time at the start of the year,” said BMW motorsport director Jens Marquardt.
“The first time we took to the track with this system, the challenge was to integrate it in one car per manufacturer in such a way that it did not affect the normal testing.
“The DRS has consistently been further developed since then. We have carried out a stress test on the system, and it is now ready to be used at races.
“The option tyre was developed to make the DTM even more exciting. It is faster than the normal tyre over the first few laps – only the race itself will reveal exactly how much faster.
“However, the tyre does degrade after a certain time. Even after the tests, we do not know exactly how it will behave.
“The combination of the two changes, both the option tyre and DRS, also promises to provide some exciting moments. We endorse the use of both elements, and see them as a good decision for the sport and the fans,” Marquardt concluded.
