Red Bull Ring DTM: Wolff: Mercedes performance has not met expectations

Toto Wolff admits Mercedes must strive for better in the DTM as two wins fail to mask the manufacturer's current struggles.
Toto Wolff says Mercedes-Benz is focused on improving its fortunes in the second-half of the 2014 DTM season after a disappointing start to its year alongside BMW and Audi.

Though the manufacturer has won two of the five races this season with Christian Vietoris at Oschersleben and Robert Wickens at the Norisring – both of which were held in difficult weather conditions -, Mercedes have been notably off the pace with its C-Coupe as a whole.

Indeed, wins aside, Vietoris and Wickens have scored just a further six points between them in 2014, while Mercedes failed to score a single point between seven drivers at Hockenheim and Hungaroring, leaving it a mammoth 137 points behind in the manufacturers' standings.

With this in mind, Head of Mercedes Motorsport Wolff admits the season hasn't lived up to expectations but remains committed to improving the historic marque's fortunes, beginning with round six at the Red Bull Ring.

“We're returning with the DTM to Austria next weekend after Formula 1's recent fantastic return to Spielberg. I always look forward to race weekends in my home country. We've got a tough task ahead of us this year in Spielberg. We have to be realistic about expectations, as was the case in the previous races this season, and try to get the maximum possible.

“We'll just have to see what the end effect of our efforts is and what final positions we can manage. Christian and Pascal finished in the Top Eight in the last race in Moscow, which was quite a decent result for that type of track. We experienced many ups and downs during the first half of the season.

“We know that our performance does not meet our expectations in all conditions and at every circuit, and for that reason, we will continue to work hard in order to improve during the second half of the season.”
