DTM Nürburgring: Wittmann beginning to think of DTM title

Marco Wittmann: I have driven superbly so far by following my tactic of taking things one race at a time. This approach has taken me to four wins so far this season.
BMW's Marco Wittmann says he will not deviate from his championship leading approach despite fronting the DTM standings by 64-points after yet another win at the Nurburgring.

Proving again to be unstoppable, Wittmann took yet another clinical pole-position and victory at the Nurburging as his nearest rivals behind all fell by the wayside following a collision strewn seventh round of the championship.

Wittmann so far this season has refused to talk much of title winning credentials but the young German now admits he's beginning to think of a potential maiden DTM crown.

With only 75-points left on table with three remaining rounds only three-drivers can mathematically deny the young German of a famous title win in only his second DTM season.

Mattias Ekstrom and Edoardo Mortara both sit 64-points back while outgoing champion Mike Rockenfeller trails by a further three-points.

“I am obviously aware that I have a big lead over my closest rivals, so I would be lying if I said I am not thinking about the title,” admitted Wittmann.

“However, I have driven superbly so far by following my tactic of taking things one race at a time. This approach has taken me to four wins so far this season. Therefore, I will stick to my principles. I am now fully focussed on the next race at the Lausitzring.

“We did not do so well there last season, so we cannot take for granted that we will be up among the front-runners again there.”

Not signalling a let up in his relentless steamroll of the season, Wittmann doesn't believe the performance ballast will have much impact in the remaining races but may make qualifying slightly trickier.

“In my opinion, the additional kilos do not make such a big difference in the race as they do in qualifying,” said Wittmann.

“Every thousandth of a second counts in qualifying in the DTM. A few kilos more or less can make all the difference then.”
