DTM has announced a switch to permanent driver numbers which will take affect as of the 2015 season, following the lead of Formula 1 12 months ago.

Driver are now able to select their own individual racing number between 2-99 which will stay with them for their entire DTM career. The number one will be reserved for the reigning champion, as is common practice in other motorsport series like Formula 1 and MotoGP.

A number of drivers gave explanations to their number selections, with 2014 champion Marco Wittmann stating he would have selected number 11 if he didn't have the exclusive option of the number one plate.

Augusto Farfus and Christian Vietoris both linked their numbers to past achievements and memories.

"For me, the 18 is linked with a kind of time travel," Farfus said. "Back in 1992, I contested my first kart races with this number. A lot of nice memories are connected with the #18 and I would love to continue my personal success story with this number in DTM."

Vietoris added: "In the past, I always was successful with this number. For me, this number stands for good feelings, luck and success. I won - for instance - the Formula BMW title in superior style, with the #8."

Other drivers revealed their selection was down to superstitions, which are infamous in motorsport. Mike Rockenfeller selected 99 because he says the number nine brings him luck.

"The 9 always was a good number for me. And so I thought that things jus can't go wrong with two nines on my car," Rockenfeller said.
