Gary Paffett has claimed top spot on the timesheet as the DTM field got to grips with the Norisring street circuit, with Mercedes grabbing the early initiative.
The ART Mercedes AMG driver took the provisional P1 spot in the closing stages of the first free practice session ahead of former Formula 1 star Paul di Resta.
On the short 1.4-mile circuit the entire 24-car field was separated by less than half a second on the timesheet, as Paffett edged out his fellow countryman by 0.026s.
It was Bruno Spengler who set the early pace in the session in the under-fire MTEK BMW M4 machine but he was eventually bumped down the order into third place, ahead of Spaniard Daniel Juncadella as double race winner at Lausitz Jamie Green completed the top five.
Adrien Tambay claimed sixth spot at the end of FP1 from Robert Wickens in seventh ahead of BMW trio Maxime Martin, Augusto Farfus and Marco Wittmann.
The defending DTM champion Wittmann has just returned from a Formula 1 in-season test at the Red Bull Ring with Toro Rosso and took a while to get up to speed, much like fellow F1 test driver Pascal Wehrlein who ended the session 13th.
The DTM competitors will get another chance to test their cars ahead of the qualifying session for race one, scheduled for Saturday afternoon.
