Christian Vietoris has claimed a dramatic pole position for race one at the Norisring street circuit as the track rapidly dried up during the session.
Vietoris stole provisional pole from fellow Mercedes driver Gary Paffett with his final lap as the chequered flag fell on qualifying.
Paffett, who had set the pace during the dry free practice session on Friday, had earlier wrestled P1 from former F1 star Paul di Resta just seconds before Vietoris went quickest of all as the drying track saw lap times tumble throughout qualifying.
Double race winner from Lausitz Jamie Green has grabbed third place on the grid in his Audi after pipping di Resta, but it was Mercedes' turn to celebrate as they took five of the top seven spots on the grid.
Formula 1 test driver for Mercedes and Force India Pascal Wehrlein took fifth place ahead of highest BMW driver Augusto Farfus in sixth.
Robert Wickens, who had set the quickest pace in the soaking wet FP2 session, put his HWA Mercedes seventh on the grid as defending DTM champion Marco Wittmann grabbed eighth. Spaniard Miguel Molina and Martin Tomczyk completed the top ten places on the race one grid.
