Miguel Molina has ended Friday practice as the surprise package by going quickest at the Nurburgring after easing out Paul di Resta and Jamie Green.
The Spaniard, who sits 17th in the DTM championship, stormed to the top of the timesheet with a late flyer go quickest by just 0.043s from di Resta. Title fighters Pascal Wehrlein made significant gains during the afternoon session to finish sixth, while Mattias Ekstrom struggled in 10th.
During the opening blasts Gary Paffett held top spot before the majority of drivers tweaked race set-up. The timesheet remained largely unchanged until a final 10 minute sprint with Molina setting the fastest lap of the weekend so far with a 1m 22.861s.
Green, who still has an outside shot at the DTM title, ended the day third fastest ahead of Mike Rockenfeller with Robert Wickens rounding out the top five.
Championship leader Wehrlein was sixth ahead of Abt Audi team-mates Adrien Tambay and Edoardo Mortara, as Christian Vietoris and Ekrstrom completed the top ten.
Such was the competitive and quick nature of the session, all 24 drivers were separated by less than a second while Bruno Spengler's time of 1m 23.629s would have been fast enough to put him top in FP1 was only enough for 21st in FP2.
