Nico Muller will start the opening round of the 2016 DTM from pole position for the first time after carrying his impressive practice pace into qualifying at the Hockenheimring.
One of only two drivers to dip below 1min 34secs in FP2, Muller was the only driver to repeat the feat when it mattered in qualifying, his 1min 33.876secs lap commanding an impressive three tenths margin over an otherwise closely matched field.
The Swiss driver, who is competing in only his second season of DTM this year, will line-up alongside Edoardo Mortara, who makes it an all-Audi front row in second position, with Robert Wickens leading the Mercedes charge in third.
A strong session for the Audi contingent, the A5 DTM will fill six of the top ten positions, with Jamie Green and Mike Rockenfeller surrounding the sole top six C-Class in fifth and sixth positions.
BMW's tough start to the season continues with Marco Wittmann its top representative in a fairly lowly tenth position, with Bruno Spengler the next highest M4 driver in 13th, while the only rookie on the grid – Esteban Ocon – starts a respectable 12th position.
