Audi Team Abt's Mattias Ekstrom says his exceptional fightback from eleventh to second during today's Austrian DTM race at the Red Bull Ring 'feels as good as a win'.

The former double champion qualified down in eleventh position for today's second DTM race but marched up the order after executing an alternative tyre strategy to great effect.

While the majority of runners opted to pit before the 20 lap marker, Ekstrom made the most of the clean air at the front of field and led the mid-part of the race before pitting on lap 29.

By that time, Ekstrom - on fresher tyres - had virtually neutralised the gap to leaders and ended up finishing second behind BMW's Timo Glock after picking off his Audi RS 5 stablemate Jamie Green late in the race.

"Sometimes second place can feel like a win," said Ekstr?m. "Today is such a day. The race was mega. Just a shame that we weren't so good in qualifying here, otherwise a dream weekend with my friends from Red Bull could have been possible.

"Even so, it was fantastic racing today and I'm delighted for my team that worked so hard after the accident at the start yesterday in order to prepare the car perfectly again for me."

Ekstrom now moves up to tenth in the championship standings, having only previously scored two-points prior to the Austrian weekend.
