Zandvoort: Auer seeks further points at Zandvoort

Lucas Auer: My personal goal is points – 25 or 1, I'll take it.
Mercedes Team Mucke's Lucas Auer sets himself the target of prolonging his impressive run of form by securing further points this weekend at Zandvoort.

Having successfully negotiated his rookie season in the series last year, Auer finds himself sitting in the top-ten of the points table as the campaign nears its halfway point.

2016 has already been a breakthrough year for the young Austrian after converting his second pole position into a maiden DTM win earlier in the year at the Lausitzring.

Auer says he's still reaping the mental benefits of that Lausitzring win but highlights the importance of maintaining that level by securing further points.

The 21-year old switched from the ART Grand Prix outfit to his current Mucke squad over the winter period.

"I think with me you can see how much I've improved as a 20-year old. I had a couple of highlights last season but it wasn't consistent – highlight or not," Auer told Crash.net.

"But you could see I had some good potential. Over the winter your brain works a lot and everything has come together with Team Mucke.

"They're doing a great job with me and me with them. It felt great from the beginning. We had a bit of bad luck at Hockenheim but since the Lausitzring we've been really strong. You can feel it in the team, we're on a high.

"It's so important in sport to be mentally strong and winning at the Lausitzring has boosted that level. It's important to utilise that but you need to keep topping the level up."

As for this weekend, Auer is cautious upon his expectations but still remains hopeful of achieving another point's finish.

"HWA, Mucke and ART are all doing a great job but I think there's a special connection between myself and my team at the minute," Auer continued.

"It's difficult to judge what we can aim for this weekend because BMW were so strong here last season. I think we'll be stronger but we have to wait and see. My personal goal is points – 25 or 1, I'll take it."

The Mucke driver goes into qualifying as a firm top-ten challenger having set the seventh and eleventh quickest times during the first two practice sessions.
