Zandvoort: Paffett hails 'best weekend of the year'

Gary Paffett avoided the Mercedes tyre drama to consolidate his 'best weekend' of the 2016 season so far with a second place finish at Zandvoort.
ART Grand Prix's Gary Paffett said he never felt in danger of suffering with any tyre drama despite his Mercedes team mate's Robert Wickens and Christian Vietoris both suffering late punctures at Zandvoort.

Paffett was sitting third behind Wickens when the HWA driver fell off the circuit after suffering from a cruel puncture with under five-laps to go.

The 2005 DTM champion, who had a handy cushion over Audi's Edoardo Mortara, enjoyed the luxury of being able to nurse his Mercedes C63 over the line to consolidate his strongest weekend of the season with a second place finish.

"Fourth and a second is the best weekend we've had of the year by far," said Paffett.

"The whole Mercedes team has done a fantastic job all weekend, they didn't deserve that today. We've had really competitive cars all weekend in all the outfits. It was a shame what happened at the end.

"I wasn't really worried about the same happening. Normally you start to feel something happen with this. You keep an eye on the tyre pressures in the car. Everything was OK and the car felt good. I never had any issues.

"I knew the gaps to Edoardo and Jamie so I was pretty happy driving around slowly to collect P2. I wasn't going to make the mistake of going off and losing the points I had because it's been an excellent weekend for me."

As a result of the weekend, Paffett now moves back inside the top-ten of the championship having more than doubled his previous points tally.
