Team Abt's Edoardo Mortara has boosted his championship credentials by taking pole position for the first Hungarian DTM race as Audi emphatically govern qualifying at the Hungaroring.

BMW and Mercedes could only look on as Mortara led an almighty eight-car freight train with the entire RS 5 outfit locking out the top-eight order in dominant fashion.

While Mortara excelled at the top of the timesheets with a 1 minute 35.282 lap time, BMW's Marco Wittmann, who leads the championship ahead of the Italian by 33 points, could only manage tenth, albeit as the top M4 runner.

Briton Jamie Green proved Mortara's closest challenger at the front and missed out on pole position by just 0.082s.

Mortara's Team Abt stablemate Miguel Molina completed the top-three ahead of the Team Phoenix prepared Audi of Mike Rockenfeller in fourth.

Nico Muller maintained Audi's supremacy in fifth while Adrien Tambay, Timo Scheider and Mattias Ekstrom rounded out the remainder of the top-eight in sixth, seventh and eighth.

Reigning European F3 champion Felix Rosenqvist was the 'best of the rest' for Mercedes in ninth ahead of Team RMG's Wittmann in tenth.
