Audi's Edoardo Mortara has taken delight from his determined recovery up to the podium, which has kept his DTM title chances alive at the Hockenheimring.

The Team Abt Sportsline struggled in practice and qualifying but third place in today's sprint race has kept him within 17-points of Marco Wittmann.

For much of the opening race, Mortara was in real danger of falling out of championship contention after spending lap-upon-lap cooped up behind BMW's Timo Glock.

However, the complexion of his weekend changed after finally disposing of Glock following a daring dive at the Spitzkehre hairpin.

"Following the issues in practice, it was an outstanding race. Advancing from eighth on the grid to third is good for the show, yet anything but easy," Mortara said.

While assessing his race, Mortara didn't feel Glock was totally fair with him during their battle.

"I knew that my chance would come at the end of the race, because that's the strength of our Audi RS 5 DTM. Except for Timo (Glock), all BMW drivers were very fair," the Audi driver continued.

"Now I'm hoping for us to show a similar performance tomorrow and to be able to make up the 17 points."
