DTM Hockenheim: 'Mixed emotions' for DTM runner-up Mortara

Edoardo Mortara won his fifth race of the year at Hockenheim but can't help but cast his mind back to those lost points earlier in the year at Zandvoort.
Edoardo Mortara has expressed his pride in winning a fifth DTM race of the year at Hockenheim but was also unable to hide his sorrow after narrowly missing out on the title.

The Abt Sportsline driver won the Hockenheim finale but it wasn't enough to take the title away from Marco Wittmann, who scored the necessary points in fourth.

"My emotions are mixed. On Sunday, we won the race, plus the titles in the manufacturers' and the teams' classifications – that's a great success and a wonderful thing," Mortara said.

"On the other hand, I barely missed the drivers' title, in spite of five victories in a single season. That's hard and it'll take us a few days before we can be really happy about the positive things."

Having lost the battle for the title by such a slim margin, Mortara can't help but cast his mind back to Zandvoort, where he was wrongly given a drive-through penalty after allegedly breaking slow zone protocol.

Mortara was on course to score 10-points in sixth at the point of the alleged infraction and served the drive-through penalty but always protested his innocence.

His Abt Sportsline team mate Nico Muller was also given a drive-through penalty for the same incident at Zandvoort.

A prompt investigation of the GPS data did indeed reveal discrepancies within the system, which led to the race organisers suspending any further slow zone penalties until the issue had been rectified.

Audi's DTM boss Dieter Gass has already slammed Mortara's loss of points as 'unjust'.

"Obviously, we're sad that exactly these points are now lacking to win the title. But I have to live with that," Mortara continued.

"My team, my race engineer, my mechanics: All of them did a fantastic job this year and I felt very comfortable in my Audi RS 5 DTM.

"Winning the race was all I could do today. It was my fifth victory this year and I'm very proud of it."
