Esktrom ‘not looking at title` despite Brands win.

Mattias Ekstrom says he isn't thinking about launching a DTM title challenge despite securing his first win of the season at Brands Hatch.

Ekstrom, the 2004 title winner, has endured a tough start to the season in his Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline A4 DTM and arrived at Brands having scored just two points in the opening three races of the season.

However when Tom Kristensen and Jamie Green both hit problems in the British round of the championship, it was Ekstrom who was on hand to benefit as he claimed victory – taking full advantage of a strategy different to that of his rivals to come home just under six seconds clear of Green.

“It was a great race and was tough,” the Swede told Crash.net Radio. “I must say it is nice to get a good result after all the tough luck I've had and it's nice to be back at the podium. I have to say though that Tom Kristensen was really the man to beat this weekend as he was quick in qualifying and he was leading the race until something broke and he had a problem – I know how he feels as I've had two races like that myself this year and it isn't funny at all.

“The idea with our strategy was to be fit at the end of the race. Our philosophy was that some people would be cooking [their tyres] in the closing stages and we would have fresh rubber and it is always easier to overtake at the end of a race than it is at the start – and it worked.”

However, despite moving up to fifth in the championship standings, Ekstrom said he wasn't thinking about fighting for the title.

“I don't care for the championship anymore,” he said. “I will go to each meeting and prepare as well as I can for each individual race then we will see how it goes. But for sure, being fifth in the standings with some points is better than having none!”
