Schneider out to extend lead.

Bernd Schneider has set his sights on extending his DTM lead as the championship makes the trip to Nuremburg and the legendary Norisring, the jewel in the DTM crown.

The German, who retook the lead of the championship from Tom Kristensen with a third place finish at Brands Hatch, goes to the street circuit with an eye of increasing his slender four point advantage.

Schneider will certainly have experience on his side, having claimed victory there twice in his lengthy career, while Mercedes have traditionally had the advantage over Audi in the past.

“I look forward to the season's highlight at the Norisring,” he said. “I have won two races there. The track suits us and I want to use the opportunity to maintain the overall lead.”

Like Audi though, the 2005 and 2004 specification Mercedes' are expected to provide a stiff challenge to their newer, but heavier counterparts. Indeed, last year Stefan Mucke was a surprise front runner in his year-old Mercedes. It is form he is determined to repeat this year.

“The Norisring offers us a good chance to score points with our 2005 car and this is what I'm aiming for. The circuit suits me and our car.”
