Bruno Spengler admitted he had managed to find the 'perfect' lap at the Nurburgring after the Canadian secured his maiden pole position ahead of the sixth round of the DTM season.

Spengler, who claimed his first victory in the last round at the Norisring and currently lies third in the championship standings, left it late in the final part of qualifying at the famous German circuit to edge ahead of Audi driver Tom Kristensen - who himself had just stolen provisional pole position for championship leader Bernd Schneider.

"I'm really happy about my first DTM pole position for which I have waited quite a while," Spengler said when qualifying had drawn to a close. "The car ran well throughout, although I was not completely satisfied with the middle sector in the first two parts of qualifying. However, in the final part I managed a perfect lap with a perfect car - it was sensational. I thank the entire team - they did a great job. I expect a tough race tomorrow, and I'm particularly interested how the weather will develop."

Television camera's caught the thrilled reaction of Mercedez motorsport director when Spengler crossed the line - and the boss admitted afterwards that he was struggling to remember a more dramatic qualifying session, with anyone of the top four or five drivers having looked good for top spot at some point.

"For me, this was the most exciting DTM qualifying session that I can remember," he said, "and it could just as well have been the other way round. The improvement of the lap times from the second to the third session by almost a second is impressive.

"The drivers were totally focussed. Tom Kristensen's lap was great, but then Bruno Spengler countered in the final second. It can't be more exciting than that, remarkable and truly great motor sport action."

Schneider will start third and Jamie Green fourth - with second placed Kristensen the only non-Mercedes driver on the front two rows of the grid.
