Barcelona has been honoured as 'DTM Organiser of the Year 2006', following the series' inaugural visit to the Catalan circuit last September.
The track that plays host to the Spanish Grand Prix is the first venue in the DTM's history to receive the prestigious accolade for its maiden edition. Indeed, the weekend was deemed such a success the championship will return to Barcelona once again this year, for round nine of the ten-meeting calendar on the revamped short circuit.
The award – presented by DTM rights holder and promoter ITR e.V – has in the past two years been claimed by the EuroSpeedway Lausitz.
“All those involved were massively impressed by the event at Barcelona,” said ITR e.V. chairman Hans Werner Aufrecht. “As race organiser, the Circuit de Catalunya has set benchmarks and did so in particular when it came to organising and promoting the premiere of a DTM race.”
The circuit organisers themselves were equally delighted with the recognition, and promised to do everything possible to make the 2007 edition even bigger and better still.
“A spectacular event like the DTM deserved the best of us as an organization, and its promotion in our country had to be made at the highest professional level,” stated Circuit de Catalunya vice-general manager Aman Barfull. “We are very proud of this award and we will do our best again next September.”
