All-conquering Merc aims to remain Class of field.

The most successful car in DTM history is bidding to enter seventh heaven this year, as the new AMG-Mercedes C-Class made its debut at the Geneva Motor Show.

On the back of a staggering 54 triumphs in six seasons (1994-1996 and 2004-2006), the new machine made its grand entrance in Switzerland in the hands of Susie Stoddart and under the admiring gaze of Dr. Dieter Zetsche, CEO of the DaimlerChrysler AG.

The 2007 machine marks the third generation of the C-Class, and its development dates back to March of last year, with a heavy focus having been placed on its aerodynamics. Its maiden trackside appearance came just over a month ago, as Bernd Schneider and Bruno Spengler – the men who finished respectively first and second in the 2006 drivers' standings – put the car through its early paces.

“The C-Class can justifiably call itself a true champion in DTM history,” stated a proud Mercedes-Benz Motorsport Vice-President Norbert Haug. “No other model has won anywhere near as many races and championships.

“The racing version of the new C-Class unveiled in Geneva is making its DTM debut to coincide with the launch of the standard-production C-Class. Like the production version, the DTM model is an exceptionally beautiful car with exquisite detailing and smart technical solutions, all of which are designed to ensure that the C-Class continues its tradition of winning races.

“In the 106 DTM races the C-Class has taken part in – in the mid-90s and since 2004 – it has notched up 54 victories, and in the six seasons for which it has been involved it has achieved four title successes and twice been runner-up. We want to build on this success with the new C Class.”

The AMG-run machine will be raced in 2007 by Bernd Schneider, Mika Häkkinen, Bruno Spengler and Jamie Green, as the three-pointed star aims to make it a successful seventh season for the most enduring car in the series' history. It will make its race debut in the first round at Hockenheim on 22 April.
