Bruno Spengler was delighted after taking pole position at Hockenheim on Saturday for the opening round of the 2007 DTM.

The Canadian was just 0.077secs up on Martin Tomczyk in his DaimlerChrysler Bank AMG-Mercedes to secure the third pole in his career in the DTM and the first for the new Mercedes C-Class.

"I thank my team, which has done a fantastic job," he reflected. "We did our best and it was an extremely difficult qualifying. This pole position is a great reward for the entire HWA team. With the new C-Class, they have prepared a beautiful and fast car.

"I am totally happy with pole. Especially in the first qualifying of the season, being quickest is always something very special, as before that, nobody really knows where we are.

"It is great that it was enough for pole. Now, I am I'm a good position to start from for tomorrow. But in the DTM, it is always very close and many things can happen."

Mercedes Motorsport chief, Norbert Haug meanwhile paid tribute to the job done by Spengler and HWA: "I am really happy about the first pole position of the new C-Class in its racing premiere and about the great performance of Bruno and his team," he added.

"A big thank-you to the HWA team headed by Hans-J?rgen Mattheis and Gerhard Ungar for their good job developing the new DTM C-Class. The qualifying was exciting and the lead changed again and again in all three parts.

"Audi was in front in the first two qualifying sessions while we were first in the third part, what I prefer, to be honest."
