Difficult qualifying for DTM returnees.

Audi's DTM returnees endured a difficult comeback in qualifying for the second round of the season at the Oschersleben, Marco Werner and Frank Biela managing just 17th and 20th on the grid respectively.

Signalling his first DTM race in some 14 years, Werner was frustrated not to have made more of an impression on the grid positions, admitting that he was unable to get the most out of his second set of tyres.

"Things could have gone a little better,” he said. “Unfortunately I was slower on the second set of tyres than on the first. I definitely would have liked making it at least into the second session. I'm sorry for the team because they really worked hard. We also made some progress, but for my first qualifying in the DTM, it wasn't enough.”

Still, Werner fared better than American Le Mans Series team-mate Biela who struggled on his first outing in the A4 for three years, the 1991 champion sliding off into the gravel trap and doing no better than 18th. This will become 20th and last after he was punished for ignoring yellow flags in practice.

"This is not a result you can be satisfied with, not even considering the fact that I'm contesting a DTM race for the first time again and didn't have an opportunity to test beforehand. Perhaps on the second set of tyres I might have been able to make it into the second section.

“But in turn 10 I slid into the gravel trap because of some dirt on the track. It's really a shame. I'm still learning, even though I've been in this business for such a long time. Now I want to at least make up some ground in the race.”
